The Journey

When I started this AI-Powered Search book journey (over four years ago!) the landscape was very different. Then, the focus was on enhancing search through signals and behavioral data. I had an idea for a book and went to Manning Publications with my outline. They were a little reticent—because, as you can see, interest in the topic was nascent.

Everything changed with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022. The world woke up to the incredible capabilities of generative AI, and suddenly, the interest in AI-Powered Search exploded. I found myself racing to include new chapters on RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), generative AI, and transformers—the latest advancements that were taking the world by storm.

As long-time enthusiasts and experts in the field, Doug Turnbull, Max Irwin, dove into this evolving landscape. With our combined experience, we knew we had a unique perspective to offer. With this book, our mission is to guide you through the process of building intelligent search applications that deliver optimally relevant experiences.

As an aside, the book is not designed to be a “latest and greatest model” type of book. It’s designed to be an assortment of design patterns for implementing search in a data driven, machine learning based way. It’s not going to be an evergreen book, because our space is changing incredibly fast, but hopefully for years to come, it will be sort of best practices for end to end, implementing AI powered search. 

Which is why we also are creating a community site (which I hope you join!). It is there that we will keep the conversation going!

As mentioned, I couldn’t have embarked on this journey alone. I am deeply grateful to have Doug Turnbull and Max Irwin as my co-authors, bringing their unique expertise and talent to the table.
